Maybe it's hubristic to write a whole blog post about my own song. But the Internet is full of stuff nobody asked for; what's one more silly little set of words about one more silly little pop song<\/u><\/a>?<\/p> <\/p> For me this is more than just a pop song, though. It's the accumulation of tiny moments and fleeting feelings that builds and builds until suddenly it's love. It's the tension of questioning yourself (is this really happening? Do they feel it too?) and the release of a first kiss. It's the electricity that dances at your fingertips like a plasma ball when you get too close.<\/p> <\/p> The music for Singapore existed way before the lyrics did. Buried in a folder full of bad imitations of HAIM and The 1975 from circa 2015, languishing on a dusty hard drive, a forgotten diamond. I lacked consistency back then; I'd written some good stuff, sure, and gotten some attention, but behind every good song were twenty bad ones, and I wasn't so adept at telling them apart. Flicking through these old ideas, this one stood out like a technicolour parrot among sparrows. I was immediately drawn back in. The reverb-soaked synths in the verses giving way to glittering guitars in the chorus... It was hazy, but that essential sense of tension and release was already there. How could I have missed it?<\/p> <\/p> The next part - the words - is the most difficult part for me. Music comes naturally, an instinctual thing that dances in my chest and sings melodies in my brain. Music is a waiting game, like fishing; stay still and the inspiration will come. But words require work. Reading and reading and more reading. Thinking and thinking and more thinking. Staring at a blank page with my instrumental track playing on an endless loop. Eventually, a spark: Ishiguro's Klara, looking up at a wide-screen sky with a sense of awe and wonder. I imagine a conversation happening beneath that same sky, at the same time in a different place. She wants to fly to Singapore. He'll go anywhere as long as it's with her. Oh, you old romantic, you.<\/p> <\/p> Then, once I have the bones of it, I begin sculpting. Recording a new guitar here, a synth part there. Singing and re-singing until the melody sits just right. Push a fader up, pull another down, twist a knob, sit and listen. Chip away, listen again. And again, and again, and again, until at some undefined point it becomes \"a Record\".<\/p> <\/p> If this all sounds pretentious, that's because it is. But being pretentious is fun, right? And I think it's necessary, to allow your mind to wander, to entertain your own ideas, letting them form and examining them, selecting and nurturing the ones that mean the most to you. And this one means a lot to me.<\/p> <\/p> So yes, it's a silly little pop song, but it's my<\/em> silly little pop song. I hope you like it.<\/p> <\/p> Singapore is the third single from Seoul Metro's challenge to release a song every month in 2024. By the end of the year, they will slot together to make the first Seoul Metro album.
